What began as a method of preserving fish centuries ago in Japan, has now been a popular food.

The benefits of eating Sushi – raw and fresh – could also be a matter of concern if not consumed properly.,Sushi is a traditional Japanese food consisting of cooked vinegar rice (shari) combined with other ingredients (neta), usually raw fish, other seafood and even vegetables - wrapped around with dried seaweed.,In fact, the word Sushi, when simplified stands for Su (means Vinegar) and SHI – an abbreviated form of meshi the Japanese word for rice.,The basic ingredients are similar but the forms of sushi presentation vary. Although there are a few popular , that most people order, in reality, you can choose or make hundreds or even thousands of types.,For example, Nigiri sushi (mounds of sticky rice are layered with seafood and other ingredients); maki sushi (sticky rice and other ingredients are rolled into a cylinder, using thin sheets of dried seaweed). Raw fish itself is a separate kind of sushi, called sashimi, and is often mixed and matched with other types of sushi, such as the rolls with no rice, roll or vegetables.,Few popular varieties include: California (made with Crab and avocado), Ebi (Shrimp), Hotate (Scallop), Ika (Squid), Ikura (Salmon roe), Maguro (Tuna). Varieties also include a combination of ingredients such as seafood, vegetables, tofu, eggs and more.,Sushi is high in vitamin E, magnesium, calcium, iron, and antioxidants, and it can be loaded with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids (from the fish), known for lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.,The wasabi (a type of spicy horse radish), along with either pickled ginger (gari) is also good for your palette. But not all sushi is good for you.,Some specialty rolls, appetizers can be high in calories, carbs (from rice), fat and sodium (high salt in soya). So go easy and eat in moderation like a snack or a light meal. Similarly pregnant women should avoid Sushi or any kind of raw meat. ,Eat it fresh. Stick to the locally available varieties of fish and popular Sushi. , unless you can freeze the fish for more than 72 hours at 4 ˚F. Instead, use cooked fish or vegetables. Improperly stored fish could be a breeding ground for parasites, bacteria and cause serious food poisoning. Also some fish varieties could also have high levels of mercury, lead and iodone.,Go ahead and ,. If you are unsure, start with the vegetarian or cooked versions first.
